The Welsummer Chicken originated from Welsum Holland in the 1900's. The male and female do not look the same in color. They weigh 6-7 lbs at full maturity. The females lay terra-cotta brown eggs that are large in size. The Welsummer has a single comb. They are a dual purpose Chicken breed meant for both meat and eggs. The females can lay as many as 4 eggs in a week, their egg production is that good. They are famous for their dark brown eggs. There is only one color variety available here in the US- called Red Partridge. They are hardy birds and do good in the winter although the males are susceptible to frostbitten combs in the colder regions of the States. They are a medium sized bird with yellow skin.
I have read that they are rare here in the US and then other places I have read that they are common. I find them to be very fascinating birds and want to breed them to increase their existence. They have by far the most beautiful plumage I have ever seen. They have very distinct markings. They are one of my personal favorite breeds of Chicken. Their eggs are my favorite on my farm. When I think of a Rooster I think of the Welsummer's plumage color. So beautiful! I currently have 7 girls and 2 boys. My Welsummers are very hardy and active. They make wonderful farm pets too.
