Raising Animals
Poultry
*Why do I raise Ducks, Chickens and Turkeys?
The reason I raise Ducks, Chickens and Turkeys is because I want to teach others why they are amazing and important to preserve. I raise all different breeds of my Birds but I like to raise rare breeds because I want to preserve and increase their existence--because of that rarity. It is important to keep rare breeds going. Ducks especially are amazing. They have opened my eyes to a whole new part of life. They are truly genuine.
*Animals are my passion.*
I love focusing on proper management and nutrition of all my animals.
Ducks especially have been so amazing to raise. They have amazing personalities and are simply amazing creatures. I have found that either it be Duck or Chicken I wanted more when I started out with just a few of each species. I have a strong love for animals. My Family and I have been raising Dogs for almost 18 years, Poultry 3 years and Fish 2 years.
In February 2012 I successfully incubated my Duck eggs. This was my first time breeding. I bred my Ducks and followed all the incubating procedures and out of 12 eggs I got 7 beautiful babies that hatched! All eggs developed into babies. This was especially an amazing experience for me. I feel so proud of myself that I done this all on my own and it paid off! These 7 Ducks feel like my kids. Their colors are so cool too!
In July 2012 I incubated again! I had babies hatch at the end of July and at the end of August. Around 20 Chicken Eggs and 8 Ducks Eggs. Out of the Chicken I got 11 chicks and the Duck eggs I got 3 Ducklings. Some were not fertile and some died early. For only my second incubation ever I think I did fairly well!
When I think back I don't understand why my Family and I never raised Poultry before.
If I could recommend any specie of Fowl of course I would say the Duck. Ducks are messy birds, so for that reason if you would want not so messy birds than I'd say Chickens. Ducks are my favorite Fowl! I can honestly say it is easy to get carried away with wanting different breeds. I also have a RARE colors of different breeds so I am excited to begin breeding them. I have lost some Ducks, it's just apart of life. The ones I've lost will never be forgotten.
Within the last 3 years of raising Ducks I have learned so much. Little did I know that getting 4 Ducklings would turn into something bigger and change my life. I certainly can see myself always owning Ducks. If I don’t have as many as I have now, (which is a lot) then at least a couple. It went from 4 Ducklings to a farm full. I have raised all of my Fowl as 1-2 day(and some a couple weeks old) old babies or from hatching them out.
I have gotten most of my birds from different hatcheries including: Efowl (Minnesota), Metzer Farms (California), Townline Hatchery (Michigan; don't recommend at all), Cackle Hatchery (Missouri), Holderread Waterfowl Farm and Preservation Center (Oregon). For the highest quality of Ducks and Geese I highly recommend Holderread's Waterfowl Farm and Preservation Center.
I have had experience raising Turkeys and loved it. For Thanksgiving 2012 we raised 3 total. In 2013 I got Royal Palms and Blue Slate for breeding Stock for our future Thanksgiving Turkeys.
I hope within this website you find entertainment, excitement and that you'll learn a little something along the way.

Along with my Poultry I love raising Dogs and Fish. I have a total of 5 Dogs. My family has been raising Dogs for almost 19 years. We are better Dog Owners today of course than when we first started out. Nutrition is a BIG thing with me- and that goes for all of my Animals. They don't eat food with bad preservatives and by-product type junk; even my Fish! I have a 8 year old Husky Juneau, a 5 year old Pomeranian Mix Mya, a 4 1/2 year old Beagle Fred, a 3 year old Beagle Mix Bowie and a 12 month old Labrador Retriever Mix Henry--(Whom I adopted from my local animal shelter Nov. 12'). One of my best friends was my Dog Mick- whom I lost in October 2012. He was the son to my other two dogs Fred and Mya and Brother to my other Dog Bowie. He was and will forever be my Sweet Boy. I miss him greatly and will never forget him. Some people think I am an Animal Freak.-- I just love Animals and have a strong passion for them. I absolutely LOVE Dogs! (And Ducks!!) I melt every time I see a Puppy. (But really any Dog) My newest Family Member- (Henry) reminds me of my Mick. When I first met Henry I knew he was mine. They say when you adopt an Animal from a shelter you are saving them, but I honestly think Henry has helped save me.

Tonya M.
